The Slaughter of the Innocents

Stained glass
Cathedral of St. Peter, Regensburg, Germany

In Matthew 2:16-18 Herod orders the murder of the boy babies of Bethlehem, hoping to eliminate a possible threat to his throne. In this panel from Regensburg's Life of the Virgin windows a soldier returning from the slaughter presents Herod with a baby impaled on his sword. The figures are dressed as they would be in the 14th century.
